From 1977 to 1995, the Bates family brought their tradition, quality and care to a Bates House of Turkey on East Boulevard. It offered all the Greenville site’s staples, and even became a regular community gathering spot for local groups and organizations. Both restaurants offer indoor and outdoor seating. That’s over 100 years that we’ve been in the turkey business.

For years, Bates House of Turkey has operated a pop-up shop in Montgomery during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, and customers in Alabama’s capital have been clamoring for them to open a permanent location, Sloane added. The Bates family also provides the ceremonial turkeys every year for Alabama’s governor to “pardon” at Thanksgiving. Bates, who passed away in 2013, recalled during a 2005 interview with WSFA 12 News that it all got started when his great-aunt gave his father nine turkey eggs as a wedding present.
